2 Thessalonians 2:13

“But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:”

Context:To understand this verse better, let’s first examine the context of the passage. The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Thessalonian believers to address their concerns regarding the coming of the Day of the Lord and the return of Jesus Christ. In the preceding verses, Paul talks about the man of sin, the great apostasy, and the working of Satan’s power. In verse 13, Paul encourages the Thessalonian Christians and expresses his gratitude to God for them.

Gratitude for the Thessalonian believers:Paul begins by saying, “But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord.” Here, Paul expresses his deep gratitude to God for the Thessalonian believers. Despite the challenges they were facing, Paul appreciated their faithfulness, love for one another, and their commitment to Christ.

God’s choice and salvation:The verse continues, “because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation.” This phrase emphasizes God’s sovereign choice in the process of salvation. It is not by chance or human effort that the Thessalonians became believers but rather by God’s deliberate choice. God, in His foreknowledge, predestined them to receive salvation and be part of His eternal plan.

Through sanctification of the Spirit:The verse further states, “through sanctification of the Spirit.” Sanctification refers to the process of being set apart for God’s purposes and becoming more like Christ. It involves the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer, transforming them and conforming them to the image of Jesus. The Thessalonians’ salvation was not only a one-time event but a continuous process of growth and holiness, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Belief of the truth:Finally, the verse concludes with, “and belief of the truth.” Salvation comes through faith in the truth of the Gospel, which is centered on Jesus Christ. The Thessalonians received the message of the Gospel and believed in Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Their faith in the truth of God’s Word led them to salvation and initiated their sanctification process.
