2 Thessalonians 2:14
Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Thessalonians 2:14 (KJV)
Context
The Apostle Paul wrote 2 Thessalonians around AD 51-52 to a young church facing persecution and confusion about the Lord’s return. In this verse, he turns their attention from troubling events to the certainty of God’s saving purpose. The immediate context is Paul’s thanksgiving for believers whom God has chosen and loved, and whom He now calls through the gospel.
Meaning
Paul says, “Whereunto he called you by our gospel.” The calling is divine in origin: God is the one who takes the initiative. The gospel is the means through which that call reaches the hearer. It is not merely information but a summons that awakens faith and repentance. Through the preaching of the gospel, the Thessalonians received the invitation to follow Jesus and become partakers of His salvation.
The purpose of the call is “to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.” This phrase points to a future inheritance. The Greek expression carries the sense of possessing or obtaining something. It does not refer to Christ’s essential glory, which He already possesses as God, nor primarily to His mediatorial glory, though believers will behold that glory in heaven. Rather, it refers to the glory that will be personally put upon the saints, both in soul and body, at the resurrection. This glory is called the glory of Christ because He secures it for them and will bestow it. The calling is therefore not only to salvation but to a future inheritance of glory with Christ.
Biblical connections
This verse connects with the broader teaching of 2 Thessalonians 2, where Paul speaks of the coming of the Lord and the gathering of believers to Him. The calling is part of God’s eternal purpose, and the gospel is the means by which that purpose is carried into effect.
Application
This verse reminds believers of the significance of the gospel in their lives. Because God has called us through the gospel, we can respond with gratitude for the salvation and hope we have received. We are also called to pursue Christ-likeness, allowing His character to be formed in us as we await the glory He will give. The gospel is not only for our own benefit; we are privileged to share it with others, extending the same invitation so that they too may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the midst of trials, keeping an eternal perspective helps us endure and remain steadfast, knowing that our ultimate goal is the glory that Christ has secured for us.
Reflection
How often do we think of the gospel as a call to future glory? Let this truth shape your daily walk, filling you with hope and courage to live for Christ and to share His call with others.
