And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.

Context

The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the church in Thessalonica to address concerns and provide guidance. In this verse, Paul expresses his desire for the Lord to guide the hearts of the Thessalonian believers toward the love of God and patient waiting for Christ.

Meaning

Paul prays that the Lord would direct the believers’ hearts, meaning the inner person, not merely outward behavior. The love of God refers to the deep, unconditional love God has for His people, a love that surpasses human understanding and is demonstrated through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on the cross. Paul desires believers to experience this divine love in their hearts, allowing it to transform their lives and relationships.

The second phrase, “patient waiting for Christ,” is understood as patient endurance and steadfastness in light of Christ’s second coming. Christ will certainly come again, though the time is uncertain; His coming will be glorious and of great advantage to the saints. Therefore, believers are not only to believe in, hope for, love, and look for His coming, but also to wait patiently for it. This patient waiting is enabled by the Spirit of God and is of great use in the present state of things.

The marginal reading “patience of Christ” (Greek: hupomone Christou) may be understood as the endurance that belongs to Christ or that Christ gives, and it is closely connected to a sense of God’s love; being directed into God’s love leads also to patient endurance.
