2 Timothy 3:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:42

“But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.”

Context:To understand the verse better, let’s consider the broader context of the passage. In the preceding verses (2 Timothy 3:1-9), Paul describes the difficult times that will come in the last days, characterized by people’s love for self, money, and pleasure, as well as their rejection of the truth. In verse 10, Paul commends Timothy for his faithful following of Paul’s teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, and perseverance.

Evil men and seducers:In verse 13, Paul warns Timothy about the presence and activities of “evil men and seducers.” The term “evil men” refers to those who engage in wickedness and oppose the ways of God. “Seducers” or “impostors” are people who deceive and lead others astray from the truth. These individuals may present themselves as religious or spiritual leaders, but their intentions are deceptive.

Wax worse and worse:Paul’s warning is that these evil men and seducers will “wax worse and worse.” This means that as time goes on, their actions and influence will increase in wickedness and deception. It suggests a progressive deterioration of moral and spiritual values, resulting in greater deception and corruption.

Deceiving and being deceived:Paul highlights that these individuals will not only deceive others but will also be deceived themselves. Their deceptive practices will blind them to the truth, leading them into further delusion and error.

Application:This verse serves as a warning to Timothy, as well as to all believers, about the challenges and dangers they may encounter in their walk of faith. It cautions against false teachers, false prophets, and those who distort the truth. As followers of Christ, we need to be discerning, rooted in God’s Word, and equipped to identify and resist deception.

  • Trusting in God’s Word:Earlier in the same chapter (2 Timothy 3:14-17), Paul emphasizes the importance of Scripture and its role in equipping believers for every good work. In the face of increasing deception, Timothy is encouraged to continue in what he has learned and to be firmly grounded in the truth of God’s Word.

In summary, 2 Timothy 3:13 warns about the increasing wickedness and deception in the last days. It serves as a reminder for believers to be discerning, rooted in God’s Word, and aware of the deceptive tactics employed by evil men and seducers. By remaining steadfast in the truth and relying on God’s guidance, we can navigate through these challenging times with discernment and faith.
