3 John 1:12
Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.
3 John 1:12 (KJV)
Context
3 John is a personal letter from the apostle John to a fellow believer named Gaius. In this verse, John commends a man named Demetrius, highlighting his good reputation and the truthfulness of their testimony. The verse presents three layers of witness to Demetrius’s character: the good report of all men, the testimony of the truth itself, and the personal record of John and those with him.
Meaning
The phrase “good report” indicates that Demetrius was highly regarded and respected by the Christian community. His life and conduct were commendable and aligned with the truth of the Gospel. The testimony of “the truth itself” suggests that Demetrius’s life was so consistent with the truth that his character was self-evidently genuine. John adds his own apostolic testimony, and he assures Gaius that this record is true and dependable. This verse functions as a commendation of Demetrius, likely as the bearer of this letter, and presents him as a contrast to the negative example of Diotrephes mentioned earlier in the chapter.
Biblical connections
John’s affirmation that his record is true echoes his similar testimony in John 19:35, where he testifies to the truth of his account of Christ’s crucifixion. This connection reinforces the reliability of John’s witness and the divine truth behind his record.
Application
From this verse, we can learn several important lessons. Firstly, our behaviour and character should align with the teachings of Christ so that we may have a good reputation among both believers and non-believers. Secondly, living in truth and adhering to the principles of God’s Word is crucial for representing Christ faithfully. Finally, maintaining truthful and reliable testimonies within the Christian community strengthens the credibility and unity among believers.
Reflection
Demetrius’s example reminds us that a life consistent with the truth is a powerful testimony. As believers, we are called to live in accordance with the truth of God’s Word, being people of integrity and demonstrating the transformative power of the Gospel through our actions. Our reputation, built on truth and verified by reliable witnesses, can encourage others and bring glory to God.
