Genesis 46:33

Listen to this article

“And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation?”

This verse is part of the account of Joseph’s reunion with his father Jacob (also known as Israel) in the land of Egypt. Before this verse, Joseph had revealed himself to his brothers, who had come to Egypt seeking food during a severe famine. Joseph urged his brothers to go back to Canaan and bring their father and their entire household to live in Egypt, in the land of Goshen. In Genesis 46:33, Joseph instructs his brothers about what to say when Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, asks them about their occupation. Pharaoh was known for being interested in the skills and professions of people who entered Egypt, and he would assign them suitable roles and responsibilities within the kingdom based on their abilities.

This verse highlights a couple of important points:Divine guidance:Joseph, being aware of Pharaoh’s interest in the occupations of his family, provides his brothers with specific instructions on what to say. This shows how Joseph, even in his high position of authority, acknowledged that God’s guidance was essential in navigating the circumstances of life. Respect for Pharaoh:Joseph’s instructions demonstrate respect for Pharaoh’s authority. He recognizes that Pharaoh’s inquiry about their occupation is a legitimate concern and must be addressed appropriately. Genesis 46:33 serves as a reminder that even in times of great blessing or restoration, we should remain humble and respect the governing authorities placed over us. Additionally, it emphasises the importance of seeking God’s guidance in our daily lives, including decisions related to our occupation or vocation.

Overall, this verse provides insights into the dynamics of the relationship between Joseph, his brothers, and Pharaoh, showcasing how God’s sovereignty and human responsibilities intertwine in the narrative of Genesis.
