Genesis 46:33
And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation?
Genesis 46:33 (KJV)
Context
Joseph had revealed himself to his brothers during a severe famine. He sent them back to Canaan to bring their father Jacob and the whole household to live in Egypt, in the land of Goshen. Before they meet Pharaoh, Joseph prepares them for the ruler’s question about their occupation.
Meaning
Joseph knew Pharaoh would ask about their trade. The Hebrew word for occupation means their business, employment, or trade, whether they practiced any craft. Joseph’s instruction shows practical wisdom: he tells his brothers exactly what to say, so they answer truthfully and confidently. This preparation is fulfilled in Genesis 47:3, where Pharaoh asks the same question and they reply that they are shepherds.
Biblical connections
Joseph’s guidance reflects God’s care for His people in daily matters. Just as God directed Joseph to prepare his family, He also prepares believers for conversations and opportunities. The brothers’ honest answer about being shepherds also kept them separate from the Egyptians, who despised shepherds, allowing them to settle in Goshen as God planned. This shows that God’s guidance often works through simple, practical steps.
Application
This verse teaches believers to seek God’s guidance in their work and daily decisions. Joseph did not rely only on his position; he acknowledged that God’s direction was essential. Respect for Pharaoh’s authority is also clear, as Joseph instructed his brothers to answer respectfully. In times of blessing or restoration, remain humble and honour those in authority. Trust that God prepares you for the questions and opportunities you will face.
Reflection
God’s sovereignty and human responsibility work together. Joseph prepared his family, yet the outcome rested in God’s hands. Trust God to guide your words and actions, especially when facing important questions about your life and work.
