Exodus 6:24

Posted on 2 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And the sons of Korah; Assir, and Elkanah, and Abiasaph: these are the families of the Korhites.”

This verse is part of a genealogical record in the book of Exodus. It appears within the broader narrative of God commissioning Moses and Aaron to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. As Moses is instructed by God to confront Pharaoh and demand the release of the Israelites, Pharaoh stubbornly refuses to let them go. This genealogy provides background on the Levitical lineage, particularly emphasizing Aaron’s priestly family line in the midst of Israel’s deliverance story.

In Exodus 6, God reassures Moses of His faithfulness and His covenant with the Israelites. He reminds Moses of His name, Yahweh, and promises to fulfill His promises to the Israelites. The verse you mentioned, Exodus 6:24, is part of a list of genealogies, tracing the lineage of Moses and Aaron. It specifically mentions the sons of Korah: Assir, Elkanah, and Abiasaph.

The mention of the sons of Korah in this verse refers to a notable Levitical family group. As descendants of Levi through Kohath, the Korahites held specific responsibilities related to worship in the tabernacle and later the temple. They are particularly remembered for their role in music and liturgy.

Several psalms in the Book of Psalms—such as Psalms 42, 44–49, 84–85, and 87–88—are attributed to the “sons of Korah,” highlighting their contributions to Israel’s worship through song and poetic expression.

The genealogical records in the Bible often serve to establish the lineage and historical connections between individuals and families. They help to preserve the historical and cultural identity of God’s chosen people, the Israelites, and provide context for understanding their roles and contributions within the community.

In summary:Exodus 6:24 is part of a genealogical record in the book of Exodus, listing the descendants of Korah, who were a prominent family group among the Levites and played important roles in the worship and music ministry of Israel.
