Exodus 16:6
And Moses and Aaron said unto all the children of Israel, At even, then ye shall know that the Lord hath brought you out from the land of Egypt:
Exodus 16:6 (KJV)
Context
Exodus 16 places Israel in the wilderness shortly after leaving Egypt. Hungry and afraid, the people grumbled against Moses and Aaron, accusing them of bringing them out to die (Exodus 16:3). God answered by promising bread from heaven and testing whether they would follow His laws (Exodus 16:4). In verse 6, Moses and Aaron address the whole assembly, declaring that by evening they will know the LORD brought them out of Egypt.
Meaning
The leaders correct a wrong belief. The people had credited their hardship to Moses and Aaron, but deliverance was God’s work. The evening was the appointed time when quail would come, and the next morning manna would appear. That visible provision would confirm who truly rescued them. The verse stresses that real knowledge of God’s saving power comes through His actions, not merely through human leaders. This knowledge was not entirely new; the people had already left Egypt physically. Yet God wanted them to know more deeply that He alone was their deliverer. The timing—”at even“—was not random. It marked the exact moment when God’s care would become undeniable, turning their complaint into recognition of His hand.
Biblical connections
This moment echoes the covenant relationship God had with Israel. The same Lord who freed them from slavery now promised to sustain them daily. Their journey depended on His guidance, not their own strength. The testing in verse 4 shows that provision also taught obedience, linking physical bread to trust in God’s word. Throughout Scripture, God often reveals His power through provision, teaching His people to rely on Him day by day.
Application
For believers today, this verse invites honest reflection. It is easy to credit human leaders or circumstances for blessings, yet all good gifts come from God. When needs arise, He calls His people to trust His timing and provision. The evening reminder encourages patience, knowing that God acts at the right moment. We may not see the answer immediately, but He is faithful to show His care in ways we can recognize.
Reflection
Moses and Aaron pointed Israel to a specific evening when deliverance would be unmistakable. That same God still leads and provides for His people. Recognizing His hand in daily care deepens faith and keeps the heart humble, giving glory to Him alone.
