1 Kings Chapter 12

Summery

1 Kings 12 recounts the events following the death of King Solomon, when his son Rehoboam ascended the throne. Rehoboam traveled to Shechem, where the Israelites gathered to make him their king. Jeroboam, a prominent leader, approached Rehoboam with a request to lighten the heavy burdens that Solomon had placed on the people.

Rehoboam sought counsel from the older advisors who had served his father. They advised him to be a servant to the people and lighten their load. However, Rehoboam also consulted the young men who had grown up with him, and they advised him to be even harsher than his father.

Rehoboam, influenced by the young advisors, rejected the plea for leniency and delivered a harsh response to the people. As a result, the ten northern tribes of Israel revolted against Rehoboam's rule and proclaimed Jeroboam as their king. Only the tribes of Judah and Benjamin remained loyal to Rehoboam.

This division in the kingdom fulfilled the prophecy given by God to Jeroboam through the prophet Ahijah. God intended to punish Solomon's disobedience by dividing the kingdom. Rehoboam attempted to gather an army to fight against the northern tribes but was instructed by God not to engage in battle.

This chapter sets the stage for the divided monarchy, with Rehoboam ruling over the southern kingdom of Judah and Jeroboam leading the northern kingdom of Israel.
