Exodus 26:12

And the remnant that remaineth of the curtains of the tent, the half curtain that remaineth, shall hang over the backside of the tabernacle.

Context

God gave Moses detailed instructions for building the tabernacle on Mount Sinai, as seen in Exodus 25:40. This portable sanctuary was where God’s presence dwelt among Israel. The curtains described in Exodus 26 were made of goat hair, and there were eleven of them, one more than the inner linen curtains (Exodus 26:7). The “half curtain that remaineth” refers to the extra half of the eleventh curtain that was not used at the front entrance.

Meaning

This leftover half was to hang over the “backside of the tabernacle,” which is the west end, the location of the Holy of Holies. The arrangement ensured that the tabernacle was completely covered and protected from the elements. The following verse, Exodus 26:13, explains that the remaining length of these curtains, a cubit on each side, hung over the sides of the tabernacle to cover it completely. The careful placement of every part shows that nothing was left uncovered or exposed.
