Exodus 26:13

And a cubit on the one side, and a cubit on the other side of that which remaineth in the length of the curtains of the tent, it shall hang over the sides of the tabernacle on this side and on that side, to cover it.

Exodus 26:13 (KJV)

The book of Exodus records the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land. In this chapter, God gives Moses detailed instructions for building the tabernacle, a portable sanctuary that served as the place of worship and the meeting point between God and His people during the wilderness journey.

The tabernacle had three main areas: the outer court, the holy place, and the most holy place, also called the Holy of Holies. This verse focuses on the curtains of the tent, which formed the outer covering. These curtains were made of goat hair and protected the inner linen curtains beneath them. God commanded that an extra cubit, about eighteen inches, of curtain length should remain on each side. This extra length was to hang over the sides of the tabernacle, ensuring that the sacred structure was completely covered and protected.

The precise measurement shows God’s attention to detail. Nothing was left to chance or human preference. Every part of the tabernacle followed His design exactly, teaching Israel that worship must be done according to God’s instructions, not human ideas. The overhang was not merely decorative; it served a practical purpose. It guaranteed that no part of the holy structure was exposed or vulnerable. This careful design reflects God’s desire for complete protection and sanctity.

The tabernacle was a visible sign that God dwelt among His people. The covering curtains provided protection and defined the sacred space, separating it from the rest of the camp. This covering points to God’s care for His people and His desire to be with them. The careful construction also foreshadows Jesus Christ, who came to dwell among humanity and provide a complete covering for sin through His sacrifice. Just as the curtains shielded the tabernacle, Christ’s sacrifice covers believers completely.

Although believers do not build a physical tabernacle today, the principles remain. God still watches over and cares for His people, providing protection and covering in every circumstance. Just as the curtains guarded the sanctuary, God’s presence guards those who trust in Him. The detailed instructions also remind believers to follow God’s Word carefully, trusting that His ways are right even when they do not understand every reason. God’s order in worship and life is not arbitrary; it reflects His holy character and His loving care.

The tabernacle calls believers to approach God with reverence and awe. God is holy, and His presence deserves honor. While there is no physical tent today, every believer can cultivate an attitude of worship and reverence in the heart, recognizing God’s holiness and seeking His presence daily. The overhanging curtains remind us that God provides complete covering for His people, and He desires a relationship with each one. Trust in His provision, and rest in the security He alone gives.
