Exodus 26:16

Ten cubits shall be the length of a board, and a cubit and a half shall be the breadth of one board.

Exodus 26:16 (KJV)

God gave Moses detailed instructions for building the tabernacle, a portable sanctuary that showed His presence among Israel in the wilderness. This verse specifies the size of each board: ten cubits long and one and a half cubits wide. A cubit was about eighteen inches, so each board was roughly fifteen feet long and twenty-seven inches wide.

The verse focuses on exact measurements. God did not leave the size of the boards to human choice. He gave a precise length and breadth, and the people were to follow it. The same dimensions appear later in Exodus 36:21, confirming that Israel obeyed God’s specification exactly. This precision shows that worship of God is orderly and that His commands matter in every detail.

The boards were made of acacia wood and overlaid with gold, as the surrounding verses describe. The tabernacle itself points to Christ, who “tabernacled” among us (John 1:14). Just as God dwelt with Israel in the tabernacle, so Christ came to dwell with humanity. The careful construction of the earthly dwelling place reflects the holiness and perfection of God’s presence.

This verse teaches that God cares about the details of our obedience. When He gives clear instructions, we are to follow them faithfully, even when the reason is not fully explained. The Israelites did not question the size of the boards; they built according to the command. Our response should be similar: trust God’s design and carry out His will with care.

Consider how you treat the smaller commands of Scripture. Do you obey them with the same seriousness as the larger ones? The tabernacle’s construction reminds us that God’s presence deserves our best, most careful effort. Let this verse encourage you to serve God with precision and reverence, knowing that He sees and values faithful work.
