Leviticus 6:19

Listen to this article

“And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,”

Context:Leviticus is the third book of the Old Testament, and it primarily focuses on the laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites through Moses. In this particular verse, God is speaking to Moses, providing instructions regarding the offering of a specific kind of grain offering.

Understanding the offering:In the preceding verses (Leviticus 6:14-18), God instructs Moses regarding the grain offering, which was to be prepared by the priests and consumed by them. The offering mentioned in verse 19 specifically deals with the preparation of a portion of this grain offering.

Symbolism and significance:The grain offering, also known as the meal offering or the cereal offering, was an important part of the sacrificial system in ancient Israel. It was a non-blood offering that symbolised thanksgiving, dedication, and devotion to God. It represented the offering of the fruits of the land as a means of expressing gratitude and seeking God’s favour.

  • Obedience and attention to detail:Leviticus is filled with intricate instructions for the Israelites to follow concerning various offerings and rituals. It emphasises the importance of obedience and attention to detail in carrying out the commands of God. In this verse, God specifically addresses Moses to ensure that the priests carefully follow the regulations related to this particular offering.
  • The role of the priests:Throughout Leviticus, the priests are designated as mediators between God and the people. They were responsible for performing the various rituals and offerings, maintaining the tabernacle, and teaching the people the statutes and laws of God. The instructions given to Moses were to be relayed to the priests so they could carry out their duties faithfully.
  • Application for believers today:As Christians, we do not observe the Levitical sacrificial system because Jesus Christ fulfilled the requirements of the Law through His perfect sacrifice on the cross. However, we can draw principles from this passage that apply to our lives today. We are called to offer ourselves as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1) and to present our lives as a fragrant offering to God (Ephesians 5:2). We should strive for obedience, attention to detail, and a heart of gratitude as we dedicate our lives to God.

In conclusion, Leviticus 6:19 reminds us of the importance of obedience, attention to detail, and gratitude in our relationship with God. While the specific instructions regarding the grain offering may not directly apply to us today, we can learn valuable lessons about devotion and surrendering our lives to God.
