Leviticus 7:5

Listen to this article

“And the priest shall burn them upon the altar for an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it is a trespass offering.”

Context:Leviticus is a book in the Old Testament that primarily deals with the laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites through Moses. Leviticus 7 specifically focuses on the instructions regarding the offerings and sacrifices that were to be presented to the Lord.

The Trespass Offering:Leviticus 7:5 introduces the concept of a trespass offering. This type of offering was meant to atone for unintentional sins committed against God or others that required restitution. It was necessary to make things right when someone had crossed a boundary or violated a commandment of the Lord, even unknowingly.

The Burning of the Offering:The verse states that the priest was to burn the trespass offering on the altar. Burning the offering symbolised the complete surrender and dedication of the offering to God. Fire is often associated with purification and the divine presence. By burning the offering, it was offered to God as a fragrant and acceptable sacrifice.

Significance of the Offering:The trespass offering was an essential part of the Israelites’ relationship with God. It provided a means for individuals to seek forgiveness and reconciliation with God when they had unintentionally violated His commandments. It emphasised the seriousness of sin and the need for repentance, even in cases where the transgression was not deliberate.

Jesus Christ as the Ultimate Offering:In the New Testament, we learn that Jesus Christ fulfilled the role of the ultimate sacrifice and offering for sin. He became the perfect Lamb of God who took upon Himself the sins of humanity, offering redemption and forgiveness to all who believe in Him. Through Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross, the need for animal sacrifices and offerings, including the trespass offering mentioned in Leviticus, was ultimately fulfilled and superseded.

Application for Believers Today:While the specific regulations and requirements of the Levitical offerings no longer apply in the same manner for Christians, the principles behind them still hold relevance. The concept of seeking forgiveness and reconciliation with God for our unintentional sins is still important. As believers, we are called to acknowledge our faults, repent, and seek God’s forgiveness through faith in Jesus Christ.

In summary, Leviticus 7:5 introduces the trespass offering, a means for the Israelites to seek forgiveness and reconciliation with God for unintentional sins. The burning of the offering on the altar symbolised complete surrender to God. Today, we look to Jesus Christ as the ultimate sacrifice who fulfilled the requirements of the Law and offers forgiveness to all who believe in Him.
