Listen to this article

And for his sister a virgin, that is nigh vnto him, which hath had no husband: for her may he be defiled. Leviticus 21:3 (KJV)

Leviticus 21 contains instructions specifically for the priests and the high priest regarding their conduct, holiness, and eligibility to perform certain religious duties. “Neither shall he profane his seed among his people: for I the Lord do sanctify him.” This verse emphasizes the priest’s responsibility to maintain the sanctity of his lineage. The word “seed” refers to his children or descendants, and “profane” means to treat as common or unholy. In essence, the passage highlights the importance of preserving purity and reverence within the priestly line. The phrase “for I the Lord do sanctify him” indicates that the Lord Himself sets the priest apart and consecrates him for His service. The priest’s role was not to be taken lightly, for they were chosen by God and entrusted with mediating between God and the people, offering sacrifices, and leading Israel’s worship. By emphasizing the priest’s duty to preserve the sanctity of his offspring, the text underscores the significance of generational continuity in the priesthood and stresses that the priest’s descendants should also be committed to upholding the holy standards set by God. This serves as a reminder to the priests of their responsibility to maintain the integrity of their lineage and the honor of their office, and it calls them to live in a way that reflects the sanctification bestowed upon them by the Lord. While the immediate audience was the priests of Israel, the principle can extend to believers today. Christians, described as a “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9), are likewise called to live in holiness and consecration to God. We are urged to uphold the sanctity of our faith, ensuring that our actions bring honor to God and reflect the calling we have received. In summary, Leviticus 21:15 highlights the priest’s responsibility to preserve the sanctity of his offspring and reminds us of the importance of living in a manner that reflects the holiness bestowed upon us by God.
