Leviticus 25:18

Posted on 17 September 2023
Listen to this article

“Wherefore ye shall do my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them; and ye shall dwell in the land in safety.”

Context:Leviticus 25 deals with the institution of the Year of Jubilee, which was a special year of rest and restoration for the people of Israel. During this year, the land was to lie fallow, debts were to be forgiven, and Israelites who had sold themselves into slavery were to be set free. Verse 18 is part of God’s command to the Israelites to follow His statutes and judgments so that they may dwell in the land safely.

Obedience to God’s Statutes:The verse begins with a call to obedience. The people of Israel were expected to faithfully follow God’s statutes and commandments. Obedience was crucial for their well-being and prosperity. Similarly, as believers today, we are called to obey God’s Word and live in accordance with His commands. Obedience brings blessings and a deeper relationship with God.

Keeping God’s Judgments:In addition to statutes, the Israelites were instructed to keep God’s judgments. This refers to the moral and ethical principles that govern human behaviour. By following God’s judgments, the Israelites were called to live justly, fairly, and with integrity. As followers of Christ, we are also called to uphold God’s moral standards and make righteous judgments in our daily lives.

Dwelling in the Land in Safety:God promised the Israelites that if they obeyed His statutes and kept His judgments, they would dwell in the land safely. This was a blessing and assurance of God’s protection and provision. It emphasised the importance of obedience and highlighted the intimate connection between their actions and the blessings they would receive. While we may not dwell in a physical land, as Christians, we can experience the safety and security of God’s presence when we follow His ways.

Application:

  • Obedience and Blessings:This verse teaches us the principle that obedience to God’s Word brings blessings. When we follow God’s commands and live according to His principles, we position ourselves to receive His favour, protection, and provision.
  • Faithful Living:Just as the Israelites were called to faithfully keep God’s statutes and judgments, we are called to live faithfully as followers of Christ. This involves aligning our lives with the teachings of Scripture and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our actions, thoughts, and decisions.
  • Trusting God’s Promises:The promise of dwelling safely in the land reflects God’s faithfulness to His people. We can trust that God is true to His Word, and as we faithfully follow Him, He will watch over us and provide for our needs.
  • Seeking God’s Guidance:To obey God’s statutes and keep His judgments, we need to understand His Word. Regular Bible study, prayer, and seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance are essential for aligning our lives with God’s will and living in obedience to Him.

Remember, as Christians, we are no longer under the Old Testament laws and regulations found in Leviticus. However, the principles of obedience, faithful living, and trusting in God’s promises are timeless and still applicable to us today.
