Listen to this article

According to the multitude of yeeres, thou shalt encrease the price thereof, and according to the fewnesse of yeeres, thou shalt diminish the price of it: for according to the number of the yeeres of the fruites doeth hee sell vnto thee. Leviticus 25:16 (KJV)

“According to the multitude of years thou shalt increase the price thereof, and according to the fewness of years thou shalt diminish the price of it: for according to the number of the years of the fruits doth he sell unto thee.” This verse is part of a larger section in the book of Leviticus known as the “Year of Jubilee” regulations. The Year of Jubilee was a special year in the Israelite calendar that occurred every 50th year. During this year, various laws were enacted concerning the return of ancestral property, the liberation of Hebrew slaves, the release of debts, and the letting of the land to lie fallow.

In the context of Leviticus 25:16, the verse addresses the pricing of land. It states that the value of the land should be determined based on the number of years remaining until the next Year of Jubilee. If the time until the Jubilee is greater, the price of the land should increase; if the time is shorter, the price should decrease. The principle behind this regulation was to ensure fairness and prevent exploitation.

This verse reflects the divine principles of justice and equity that God desired for His people. By adjusting the price of land according to the time remaining until the Jubilee, God established a system that prevented excessive accumulation of wealth and protected the rights of individuals.

The Year of Jubilee, as a whole, was a powerful reminder of God’s provision and the importance of trust in Him. It was a time of rest, restoration, and re‑establishment. Debts were forgiven, those who had lost their ancestral property were given an opportunity to reclaim it, and the land was allowed to lie fallow. This cycle reinforced the idea that ultimately everything belonged to God, and His people were stewards of the land and its resources.

While the Jubilee regulations were specifically relevant to ancient Israel, they also teach valuable lessons for today. These principles encourage us to consider fairness, justice, and compassion in our dealings with others. They remind us to acknowledge God as the ultimate provider and to recognize that we are called to be responsible stewards of the resources entrusted to us.

In summary, Leviticus 25:16 provides guidance on the pricing of land during the Year of Jubilee. The verse highlights God’s desire for fairness and justice, ensuring that the value of land is determined by the time remaining until the next Jubilee. By studying this verse and its surrounding regulations, we can glean insights into God’s principles of equity, provision, and stewardship.
