Numbers 2:8
And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred.
Numbers 2:8 (KJV)
Context
Numbers 2 records God’s precise instructions for arranging the twelve tribes around the tabernacle during the wilderness journey. Each tribe had a set place and role. This verse gives the number of men counted in the tribe of Zebulun: fifty-seven thousand four hundred. The phrase “his host” refers to Zebulun’s military division, part of the larger camp of Judah. The census counted men twenty years old and upward, able to go to war.
Meaning
This number matches the earlier census in Numbers 1:31, showing consistency in the count. Zebulun, with Issachar and Judah, formed the eastern camp, which set out first (Numbers 2:9). This position was both practical and symbolic, with God’s presence at the center.
Biblical connections
The precise numbering reflects God’s care for order and His personal knowledge of His people. Just as each tribe had a place, every believer has a role in the body of Christ. The arrangement around the tabernacle points to the centrality of worship and God’s presence among His people.
Application
God sees and numbers His people. He values each person’s contribution to the whole community. The Israelites’ obedience in being counted and organized is a model for believers today. Trust that God has placed you exactly where He wants you, and serve faithfully in that position.
Reflection
Consider how you can honor God by embracing your specific role in His family, knowing that He orders all things for His glory and the good of His people.
