Numbers 1:31
Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred.
Numbers 1:31 (KJV)
Context
The book of Numbers records Israel’s journey from Mount Sinai toward the Promised Land. In Numbers 1, God commands Moses to count every man twenty years old and upward who is able to go to war (Numbers 1:1-3). This census was a divine appointment, not merely a human military plan. It organized the people for travel and battle, showing that God values order and preparation. The census also prepared Israel for the challenges ahead, both in the wilderness and in the land they would enter.
Meaning
This verse gives the number for the tribe of Zebulun: fifty-seven thousand four hundred. Zebulun was one of the twelve tribes, descended from Jacob’s tenth son, Zebulun, whose mother was Leah (Genesis 30:19-20). The count included men from twenty years old and upward, able to serve in war. Each tribe was counted by its families and households, so the number reflects both the tribe’s size and its readiness. This specific figure is a factual record, but it also shows that each tribe was counted and valued. God did not overlook any family or any person.
Biblical connections
The census shows that God knows His people individually and values each one. He did not lose track of any family or any person. This same care appears throughout Scripture, where God calls His people by name. The tribe of Zebulun later received land in the northern part of Canaan, and its history continued within the nation of Israel. The census also points to obedience, for Moses and Aaron did exactly as the Lord instructed. Their faithful response reminds us that following God’s commands brings order and blessing to the community.
Application
For believers today, this verse encourages trust in God’s sovereign plan. He sees every person within the community of faith, and He cares for each one. Just as Israel prepared for physical battles, Christians are called to be spiritually prepared for the challenges they face. Ephesians 6:11-18 teaches believers to put on the whole armour of God to stand against spiritual adversaries. Readiness and organization are not opposed to faith; they are expressions of it. When we prepare carefully, we show that we take our calling seriously and rely on God’s strength.
Reflection
God’s counting of Zebulun reminds us that no one is forgotten. Every tribe, every family, and every person mattered to Him. In the same way, each believer has a place in God’s purposes. The number 57,400 is more than a statistic; it is a record of God’s faithfulness in preserving His people. As we face our own journeys, we can rest in the knowledge that God knows us by name and equips us for what lies ahead. His care is personal, and His plan is trustworthy.
