Numbers 3:4

And Nadab and Abihu died before the Lord, when they offered strange fire before the Lord, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children: and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest’s office in the sight of Aaron their father.

Numbers 3:4 (KJV)

This verse belongs to Numbers 3, where God assigns duties to the Levites, the tribe set apart to serve the tabernacle and assist the priests. Here the record turns to Aaron’s own sons, showing that even the high priest’s family must honor God’s commands.

Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD because they offered “strange fire,” an unauthorized offering not commanded by God. Modern translations consistently render this phrase as “unauthorized fire” or “unholy fire,” clarifying that the offering did not follow God’s prescribed manner. The phrase “before the LORD” stresses that their sin happened in His direct presence, and His judgment was immediate. They had no children, so their line ended. Their brothers Eleazar and Ithamar then served as priests in the sight of Aaron their father, continuing the priestly work.

The full account in Leviticus 10:1-3 explains that Nadab and Abihu brought fire that God had not commanded, and fire from the LORD consumed them. This event reveals that worship must follow God’s instructions, not human invention. It also shows God’s faithfulness: despite human failure, He preserved a priesthood through Eleazar and Ithamar.

This passage warns that approaching God requires reverence and obedience. Worship is not about our preferences or creativity but about honoring God as He has revealed. The detail that Nadab and Abihu had no children reminds us that disobedience can cut off a legacy, while God’s provision of new priests shows His grace to continue His work.

God’s holiness is serious, yet His mercy is real. He judges sin, but He also sustains His people. Let this verse lead us to examine our own worship, asking whether we come to God on His terms, with humble hearts, or rely on our own ideas. True worship honors God’s word and trusts His ways.
