Numbers 4:37

These were they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, which Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses.

Numbers 4:37 (KJV)

Numbers 4:37 closes the census of the Kohathites, one of the three Levitical clans. The tabernacle was the portable sanctuary the Israelites carried through the wilderness. God commanded Moses and Aaron to count the men who could serve there.

The Kohathites were descendants of Kohath, son of Levi. Their duty was to carry the most sacred objects: the ark of the covenant, the table of showbread, the lampstand, and the altars. Yet they could not touch or see these items directly. The priests had to cover them first, so the Kohathites would not die.

The verse says the numbering was done “according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.” This phrase shows that the census was not a human idea. It was an act of obedience to God’s precise instructions. Moses acted as God’s chosen mediator, delivering and carrying out the command.

The count included men from thirty to fifty years old, those able to enter the service. This age range shows that God wanted able, prepared workers. The numbering brought order and accountability to the worship of God.

This passage connects to the wider theme of the Levites being set apart for service. In Numbers 3:12, God says the Levites are wholly given to Him. The Kohathites’ careful duties show that closeness to God’s holiness requires careful obedience.

God still values order and faithful service. Just as the Kohathites had specific tasks, each believer has a place in God’s work. We are called to serve diligently where God has placed us, following His commands with a willing heart.

The Kohathites carried the most holy things, but only under strict rules. This teaches us that serving God is a privilege and a serious responsibility. We honour Him when we obey His Word and carry out our duties with care and reverence.
