Numbers 4:41

Posted on 11 November 2023
Listen to this article

“These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, of all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, whom Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. It recounts various events, laws, and regulations that took place during their desert wanderings. In Numbers 4, the focus is on the duties and responsibilities of the Levites who were assigned to serve in the tabernacle.

The Sons of Gershon:In this verse, the emphasis is on the families of the sons of Gershon, one of the three main divisions of the Levites. The Levites were chosen by God to assist the priests in the service of the tabernacle and to transport its various components during the Israelites’ journey. The Gershonites had specific duties assigned to them concerning the transportation and handling of the curtains, coverings, and other structural elements of the tabernacle (Numbers 4:24-28).

Numbering and Service:Moses and Aaron, under the commandment of the Lord, conducted a census of the families of the sons of Gershon. This numbering was important for organizing and assigning specific tasks and responsibilities within the tabernacle. Each family had a designated role and function in the service of the congregation. The numbering was a means of ensuring order, coordination, and accountability in the worship and maintenance of the tabernacle.

Obedience to God’s Commandment:The fact that Moses and Aaron numbered the families of the Gershonites “according to the commandment of the LORD” highlights the importance of obedience to God’s instructions. God gave specific guidelines regarding the roles and responsibilities of the Levites, and Moses and Aaron faithfully followed those instructions. This demonstrates the significance of obeying God’s commands in every aspect of life, including our service and ministry.

Application:While this verse pertains to a specific historical context and the organization of tabernacle service, there are broader principles that we can draw from it. It reminds us of the importance of order, organisation, and accountability within the church and other areas of service. It also emphasises the need for obedience to God’s commands in our lives. Just as Moses and Aaron followed the commandment of the LORD, we should seek to align our actions and decisions with God’s revealed will in Scripture.

In conclusion, Numbers 4:41 highlights the numbering and organisation of the families of the sons of Gershon for their service in the tabernacle. It underscores the importance of obedience to God’s commandments and provides valuable insights into the need for order and accountability in our own lives and areas of service.
