Numbers 9:3

Posted on 4 December 2023
Listen to this article

"In the fourteenth day of this month, at even, ye shall keep it in his appointed season: according to all the rites of it, and according to all the ceremonies thereof, shall ye keep it."

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and it continues the historical account of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. The verse in question is part of a larger narrative concerning the observance of the Passover festival.

Significance of the Passover:The Passover was a significant event in the history of Israel. It commemorated God’s deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. It served as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and his mighty acts in their lives. The Passover celebration pointed forward to the ultimate deliverance through Jesus Christ.

Appointed Season:God instructed the Israelites to observe the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month (Nisan) of their religious calendar. It was to be kept “in his appointed season,” meaning at the prescribed time determined by God. This demonstrates God’s desire for order and obedience in the worship of His people.

Rites and Ceremonies:The verse emphasizes the importance of following the prescribed rites and ceremonies of the Passover. The Israelites were expected to keep the Passover according to God’s instructions, without deviating from the established rituals. This highlights the significance of obedience in worship.

Application to our lives:Although the Passover was a specific observance for the Israelites, there are valuable lessons we can learn from this verse. It reminds us of the importance of observing religious practices and rituals in a manner that honors God. It teaches us about obedience and reverence in our worship, emphasizing the need to follow God’s instructions faithfully.

The Passover and Jesus Christ:The Passover finds its ultimate fulfillment in the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus became the ultimate Passover Lamb, whose blood was shed to redeem us from sin and grant us eternal life. As Christians, we celebrate the Passover through the Lord’s Supper or Communion, which Jesus instituted as a remembrance of His sacrifice.

In conclusion, Numbers 9:3 highlights the importance of observing the Passover according to the prescribed rites and ceremonies. It teaches us about the significance of obedience and order in worship. As Christians, we can also find a deeper meaning in this verse as it points us to the ultimate Passover Lamb, Jesus Christ, whose sacrifice brings us redemption and eternal life.
