Numbers 9:2

Let the children of Israel also keepe the Passeouer, at his appointed season. Numbers 9:2 (KJV)

The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and records the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt. This verse is set in the second month after the people left Egypt, while they were traveling in the wilderness and encamped at Mount Sinai. The focus of the passage is the observance of the Passover, the annual feast instituted by God in Exodus 12 as a memorial of His deliverance of Israel from Egyptian slavery.

The Passover was a commemorative feast in which a lamb was sacrificed, its blood applied to the doorposts of each household, and the Lord “passed over” those homes when He struck down the firstborn in Egypt. The meal included unleavened bread and bitter herbs, serving as a tangible reminder of the Israelites’ redemption and God’s protective care.

The phrase “at his appointed season” stresses the importance of keeping the Passover on the specific day God designated—the fourteenth day of the first month (Exodus 12:6). This timing underscores God’s sovereignty and His desire that His people follow His prescribed schedule and instructions.

The verse also highlights obedience and faithfulness. Observing the Passover was a central element of Israel’s religious and cultural identity, and faithful observance demonstrated their obedience to God’s commandments. It was an act of worship and a continual remembrance of God’s faithfulness and deliverance.

While many Christian traditions do not require the literal observance of the Passover today, the passage offers enduring lessons. It reminds believers of the significance of obeying God’s commands and honoring the appointed times He sets in our lives. It also calls us to regularly reflect on God’s grace, provision, and the ways He has delivered us, just as He delivered Israel.

In summary, Numbers 9:2 stresses the importance of observing the Passover at the divinely appointed time, highlighting obedience, faithfulness, and remembrance of God’s deliverance. Though the specific ritual belongs to Israel’s wilderness journey, the principles of obedience and gratitude remain valuable for our own spiritual walk today.
