Listen to this article

In the fourteenth day of this moneth at euen, ye shall keepe it in his appointed season: according to all the rites of it, and according to all the ceremonies thereof shall ye keepe it. Numbers 9:3 (KJV)

Context: The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and continues the historical account of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. The verse is part of a larger narrative concerning the observance of the Passover festival.

Significance of the Passover: The Passover was a significant event in Israel’s history, commemorating God’s deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and serving as a reminder of His faithfulness and mighty acts. The celebration also pointed forward to the ultimate deliverance through Jesus Christ.

Appointed Season: God instructed the Israelites to observe the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month (Nisan) and to keep it “in its appointed season,” meaning at the prescribed time determined by God. This demonstrates God’s desire for order and obedience in worship.

Rites and Ceremonies: The verse emphasizes the importance of following the prescribed rites and ceremonies of the Passover. The Israelites were to keep the Passover according to God’s instructions, without deviating from the established rituals, highlighting the significance of obedience in worship.

Application to our lives: Although the Passover was a specific observance for Israel, the passage teaches valuable lessons for believers today. It reminds us to observe religious practices and rituals in a manner that honors God, teaching obedience and reverence in our worship and the need to follow God’s instructions faithfully.

The Passover and Jesus Christ: The Passover finds its ultimate fulfillment in the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the ultimate Passover Lamb whose blood redeems us from sin and grants eternal life. As Christians we remember His sacrifice through the Lord’s Supper or Communion, which Jesus instituted as a remembrance of His atoning work.

Conclusion: Numbers 9:3 highlights the importance of observing the Passover according to the prescribed rites and ceremonies, teaching the significance of obedience and order in worship. For Christians the verse points to the ultimate Passover Lamb, Jesus Christ, whose sacrifice brings redemption and eternal life.
