Numbers 23:27

Posted on 23 January 2024
Listen to this article

"And Balak said unto Balaam, Come, I pray thee, I will bring thee unto another place; peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence."

Context:Numbers 23 records the account of the Moabite king, Balak, who sought to curse the Israelites through the prophet Balaam. Balak feared the strength and numbers of the Israelites, so he attempted to hire Balaam to pronounce a curse upon them. However, despite Balak’s persistent efforts, God repeatedly prevented Balaam from speaking curses and instead compelled him to bless the Israelites.

Balak’s persistent request:In this verse, Balak urges Balaam to accompany him to another location, hoping that a change in scenery might influence Balaam to curse the Israelites. Balak believed that if Balaam could view the Israelites from a different vantage point, it might alter the outcome. Balak’s desire to have Balaam curse the Israelites reveals his fear and desperation to overcome them.

Balak’s mistaken understanding:Balak had a limited perspective and lacked the understanding of God’s sovereignty and favour upon the Israelites. He wrongly believed that changing the physical location or altering the circumstances could impact God’s will. However, throughout this account, God repeatedly shows His faithfulness to the Israelites and His determination to bless them, regardless of the situation or location.

God’s sovereignty and blessings:Despite Balak’s efforts, God remained steadfast in His commitment to the Israelites. God had chosen the Israelites as His special people and had promised to bless them abundantly. Balaam, being a true prophet, understood that he could only speak the words that God put in his mouth. No matter how Balak tried to manipulate the circumstances, God’s blessings upon the Israelites could not be revoked.

God’s faithfulness to His people:The broader lesson in this verse and the surrounding context is the faithfulness of God to His chosen people. God’s promises and blessings are not contingent upon human manipulation or changing circumstances. He remains faithful to His people, fulfilling His plans and purposes for them despite the opposition they face.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s sovereignty:Like Balak, we can sometimes try to manipulate situations to our advantage, believing that changing external factors will alter God’s will. However, we are called to trust in God’s sovereignty and rely on His faithfulness rather than our own efforts.
  • Seek God’s blessings:Balak sought curses, but we should seek God’s blessings. Instead of trying to thwart or harm others, we should desire God’s favour upon our lives and the lives of those around us.
  • Recognise God’s faithfulness:Just as God remained faithful to the Israelites, He is faithful to His followers today. Even when faced with challenges, opposition, or seemingly impossible circumstances, we can trust that God’s promises and blessings will prevail.

Remember, studying the Bible in its entirety and considering the surrounding verses and context helps provide a deeper understanding of God’s message and principles.
