Numbers 27:7
The daughters of Zelophehad speake right: thou shalt surely giue them a possession of an inheritance among their fathers brethren, and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to passe vnto them. Numbers 27:7 (KJV)
The book of Numbers belongs to the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Old Testament, and records the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In this passage the daughters of Zelophehad approach Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the congregation with a request concerning their father’s inheritance. Zelophehad, a member of the tribe of Manasseh, had no sons, only daughters (Numbers 27:1‑2). In the patriarchal culture of ancient Israel inheritance was normally passed from father to son, and the daughters feared that without a male heir their father’s portion in the land would be lost to other male relatives.
The daughters spoke righteously. Their appeal was grounded in the belief that it would be unjust for their father’s name to be left without a portion in the land. They presented their case before the leaders (Numbers 27:2‑4), arguing that the inheritance should remain within their family line. Moses brought the matter before the Lord, and God affirmed their request (Numbers 27:5‑8). The Lord declared that the daughters had spoken righteously and instructed Moses to grant them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brethren, ensuring that the inheritance of their father would pass unto them.
From this account several lessons emerge. First, God values justice and fairness; He is willing to hear the voices of those who are marginalized and to apply His laws with equity. Second, the daughters’ courage demonstrates the importance of standing up for what is right and advocating for justice in our own lives. Third, God’s concern for family legacy is evident in His preservation of Zelophehad’s family name and portion, highlighting the significance of honoring one’s ancestors. Fourth, the decision underscores the value of inclusivity, showing that all individuals, regardless of gender or social status, have a place in God’s plan and can share in His blessings. Finally, the clear and just response from God encourages believers to trust in His wisdom, seek His guidance, and rely on His perspective that surpasses human understanding.
