Numbers 27:6
And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
Numbers 27:6 (KJV)
Context
The book of Numbers records Israel’s journey through the wilderness after leaving Egypt. At this point, the people were near the end of that journey, preparing to enter the Promised Land. Moses was their leader, and God guided them through him.
In the verses just before this one, the daughters of a man named Zelophehad came to Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and the whole congregation. Their father had died in the wilderness, leaving no sons. They asked for his portion of the land so that their family would not lose its inheritance (Numbers 27:1-5). Moses brought their case before the Lord.
Meaning
This verse is a turning point. It shows that God heard the daughters’ request and answered directly. The phrase “the LORD spake unto Moses” means God gave a specific, personal message to his chosen servant. This was not a general word for everyone, but a clear direction for Israel through Moses.
The word “saying” points forward to what God will say next. The following verses record God’s ruling: if a man dies without sons, his daughters may inherit his land (Numbers 27:7-11). So this brief verse connects the human problem to the divine solution.
Biblical connections
God’s direct speech to Moses appears throughout the Pentateuch, showing that Moses was the mediator between God and Israel. This role points ahead to Christ, the ultimate mediator between God and humanity. The pattern of bringing a need to God and receiving his clear answer is consistent with the rest of Scripture.
Application
This passage teaches that God cares about justice and hears the concerns of his people. The daughters were not ignored because they were women. God responded to their plea and changed the inheritance law for their benefit. Believers today can bring their questions and needs to God, trusting that he listens and answers wisely.
The verse also encourages seeking God’s guidance in difficult matters. Moses did not decide on his own; he brought the case to the Lord. In the same way, God’s people should turn to him for direction when facing hard decisions, confident that he will respond.
Reflection
God’s response to Zelophehad’s daughters shows his faithfulness to the vulnerable. He values every person and ensures that no one is left without a place in his promises. This truth invites readers to trust that God sees their own situations and will act with fairness and mercy.
