Numbers 27:10

And if he have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father’s brethren.

Numbers 27:10 (KJV)

This verse belongs to God’s instruction to Moses about inheritance when a man dies without a male heir. The case began when the daughters of Zelophehad approached Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders. Their father had no sons, so they asked for his inheritance to keep his name alive. God affirmed their request and established a legal order for such situations.

God agreed with the daughters and set a clear order. If a man has no son, his inheritance goes to his daughter. If he has no daughter, it goes to his brothers. This verse gives the next step: if the man has no brothers, the inheritance goes to his father’s brothers, that is, his uncles. The purpose is to keep the land within the extended family and tribe. This law protects the family’s portion in the Promised Land and prevents property from leaving the tribe. The specific detail shows that God’s laws are not arbitrary but designed to uphold order and equity among His people.

The full legal order appears in Numbers 27:8-11. It shows God’s care for order and fairness. The daughters’ request was not selfish; it matched God’s desire to protect the vulnerable and preserve family heritage. This law also reminds us that God listens to those who seek justice. He gave clear guidance so that no one would lose their rightful portion. The broader narrative demonstrates that God provides clear direction for His community when people bring their concerns to Him.

This verse teaches that God cares about practical details. He is concerned with fairness in daily life, including property and family matters. It challenges the idea that only sons should receive inheritance. God values every person, regardless of gender. We should examine our own communities and ask whether we treat all people fairly. We can promote justice by ensuring that no one is left without what is rightfully theirs. God’s meticulous care in ordering these matters reminds us that He is involved in the ordinary details of our lives.

For believers, this earthly inheritance points to a greater truth. Our ultimate inheritance is not based on gender, background, or possessions. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we become heirs of God’s promises and receive eternal life. This inheritance is secure because it rests on our relationship with Christ, not on human rules. The careful law in Numbers shows that God is faithful to provide for His people. He does not forget the forgotten or overlook the overlooked. We can trust Him to give us our rightful portion, both now and forever.
