Listen to this article

Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsell of Balaam, to commit trespasse against the Lord in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the Congregation of the Lord. Numbers 31:16 (KJV)

Context and Background: Numbers 31:16 is part of a larger narrative found in the book of Numbers, which describes the events that occurred during the Israelites’ wilderness wanderings. In this chapter the Israelites were commanded by God to take vengeance on the Midianites for their role in leading the people into idolatry and sexual immorality.

The Influence of Balaam: The verse mentions Balaam, a prophet hired by the Moabite king Balak to curse the Israelites. Instead of cursing them, Balaam blessed the Israelites under God’s guidance. Nevertheless, Balaam later devised a plan to lead the Israelites into sin by encouraging Moabite and Midianite women to entice Israelite men into idolatrous worship and sexual immorality. This event is known as the incident of Peor.

Israel’s Trespass against the Lord: Because of Balaam’s counsel, some Israelites succumbed to temptation and committed trespass against the LORD by engaging in idol worship and sexual immorality with the women of Moab and Midian. Their actions violated God’s commandments and betrayed the covenant relationship they had with Him.

Consequences of Israel’s Trespass: As a result of their disobedience, a plague broke out among the Israelite congregation. The plague functioned as divine judgment for their transgression, demonstrating the severity of turning away from God’s commands and the serious impact of sin on both individuals and the community.

Lessons and Applications: The incident of Balaam and the Israelites highlights the danger of compromise and the influence of false teachings. Balaam sought to lead God’s people astray, serving as a warning to believers to remain vigilant against influences that may draw them away from God’s truth. The passage underscores that while God is patient and gracious, sin carries consequences that affect the whole body of believers, calling each person to obedience to God’s commands. At the same time the narrative reveals God’s justice and mercy; the plague was a means of discipline that brought the people to repentance, showing that God is just yet provides opportunities for restoration. Finally, the incident of Peor underscores the importance of remaining faithful to God’s covenant, guarding one’s heart and mind, and honoring God in all aspects of life.

Overall, Numbers 31:16 provides a sobering account of the consequences of sin and the necessity of faithfulness to God’s commands. It challenges believers to be vigilant, discerning, and committed to living in obedience to His Word.
