Numbers 32:39

Posted on 2 March 2024
Listen to this article

“And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it.”

Historical Context:Numbers 32:39 is part of the account of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. At this point, they were encamped on the eastern side of the Jordan River, preparing to cross over into Canaan. The tribes of Reuben and Gad, along with the half-tribe of Manasseh, had large herds and flocks and requested to settle in the land of Gilead, which was on the eastern side of the Jordan.

The Children of Machir:The verse specifically mentions the children of Machir, who were part of the tribe of Manasseh. Machir was a prominent figure in the tribe, and his descendants were known for their bravery and military prowess. They were instrumental in conquering the land of Gilead, which was inhabited by the Amorites at that time.

Taking and Dispossessing:The verse states that the children of Machir “went to Gilead and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it.” This indicates that they not only conquered the land but also drove out the Amorite people who were dwelling there. This was in accordance with God’s command to the Israelites to possess the land of Canaan, which involved displacing the inhabitants who practised idolatry and wickedness.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Trusting God’s Promises:The children of Machir demonstrated faith and trust in God’s promise to give the land of Canaan to the Israelites. They willingly crossed the Jordan River, engaged in battle, and claimed the land of Gilead as their inheritance. This teaches us the importance of trusting in God’s promises and being willing to take action accordingly.
  • Obedience to God’s Commands:The Israelites were called to be a holy nation and to follow God’s instructions. The children of Machir obeyed God’s command to conquer the land of Canaan and dispossess the inhabitants. Similarly, as Christians, we are called to obey God’s commandments and live a life that is pleasing to Him.
  • Courage and Perseverance:The conquest of Gilead required courage and perseverance on the part of the children of Machir. They faced formidable enemies but did not shrink back. This reminds us that in our spiritual journey, we may encounter challenges and opposition, but with God’s help, we can overcome them and claim the promises He has for us.
  • Inheriting God’s Promises:The children of Machir inherited the land of Gilead as their possession. In a spiritual sense, this points to the promise of eternal life and the inheritance we have in Christ as believers. Through faith in Jesus, we become children of God and co-heirs with Christ, inheriting the blessings and promises of God’s kingdom.

In conclusion, Numbers 32:39 highlights the courageous action of the children of Machir, who conquered the land of Gilead and dispossessed the Amorites. This passage encourages us to trust in God’s promises, obey His commands, and persevere in our journey of faith, knowing that God is faithful to fulfil His promises and grant us an eternal inheritance in Him.
