"And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the river Arnon half the valley, and the border even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon."
Context:The book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and contains the speeches of Moses to the Israelites as they were about to enter the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses is recounting the distribution of land to the tribes of Reuben and Gad.
The Tribes of Reuben and Gad:Reuben and Gad were two of the twelve tribes of Israel. The Land Granted:In Deuteronomy 3:16, Moses affirms that he gave the Reubenites and Gadites the land from Gilead (which was situated on the eastern side of the Jordan River) all the way to the river Arnon. This encompassed half the valley and extended to the river Jabbok, which formed the border of the children of Ammon.

- Faithfulness and Unity:The tribes of Reuben and Gad demonstrated the importance of unity and faithfulness to their fellow Israelites. Although they desired land on the eastern side of the Jordan, they willingly committed to help their brethren conquer the land on the western side. This teaches us the value of unity and supporting one another in fulfilling God’s purposes.
- Honoring Commitments:Moses made a conditional agreement with Reuben and Gad, and they fulfilled their part of the agreement by fighting alongside their fellow Israelites. This reminds us of the importance of honoring our commitments and being people of integrity.
- God’s Provision:God provided for the needs of the Reubenites and Gadites by granting them abundant land for their livestock. This serves as a reminder that God is faithful in providing for His people and meeting their specific needs.

- Unity in the Church:As believers in Christ, we are called to unity within the body of Christ. Just as Reuben and Gad supported their fellow Israelites, we should support and encourage one another, serving together to advance God’s kingdom on earth.
- Faithful Commitment:We should honor our commitments, whether to God or to others. This includes fulfilling our responsibilities within the Church, honoring our promises, and being people of integrity in all areas of life.
- Trusting God’s Provision:Like the Reubenites and Gadites, we can trust that God will provide for our needs as we faithfully follow Him. We should seek His guidance and trust in His provision, knowing that He is a faithful and generous God.
