Deuteronomy 3:17

The plain also, and Jordan, and the coast thereof, from Chinnereth even unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, under Ashdoth–pisgah eastward.

Deuteronomy 3:17 (KJV)

Moses speaks to Israel on the plains of Moab, just before they enter the Promised Land. He reviews their wilderness journey and the victories God gave them east of the Jordan. This verse belongs to that historical review, describing the territory already conquered and allotted to Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

The verse lists precise landmarks that mark the inheritance of those tribes. “The plain” is the Arabah, the rift valley running south from the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea. “Jordan” is the river itself, the western boundary of their land. “Chinnereth” is the Sea of Galilee, named after a nearby town. “The sea of the plain, even the salt sea” is the Dead Sea, the southern limit. “Ashdoth–pisgah” refers to the slopes of Pisgah, the mountain range east of the Jordan, marking the eastern edge. Together these features define the full extent of the land God gave them.

The same region is described in Joshua 12:3, confirming the boundaries of the conquered territories. The detailed boundaries show that God’s gift was concrete and measurable, not vague or abstract.

God’s faithfulness is seen in the precision of these borders. He did not give Israel a vague promise but a real land with real landmarks. This reminds believers that God keeps His word in specific, tangible ways. It also encourages gratitude: the inheritance was a gift, won by God’s power, and each boundary was a testimony to His provision.

The verse invites us to remember God’s past faithfulness as we face our own entrance into His promises. Just as Israel could look at the Jordan and the Dead Sea and see God’s provision, we can look at the concrete ways He has guided and provided for us. The land was a reminder of His covenant, and our lives can be the same—a visible witness to His enduring faithfulness.
