Deuteronomy 3:16

And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the river Arnon half the valley, and the border even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon;

Deuteronomy 3:16 (KJV)

The book of Deuteronomy contains Moses’ speeches to the Israelites as they were about to enter the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses recounts the distribution of land to the tribes of Reuben and Gad, two of the twelve tribes of Israel. When the Israelites were nearing the Promised Land, these tribes, known for their abundant livestock, requested the land east of the Jordan River. Moses granted their request with the condition that their fighting men would assist the other tribes in conquering the land west of the Jordan before settling in their own territory (Numbers 32:16-27).

In Deuteronomy 3:16, Moses affirms that he gave the Reubenites and Gadites the land from Gilead, situated on the eastern side of the Jordan River, all the way to the river Arnon. This encompassed half the valley and extended to the river Jabbok, which formed the border of the children of Ammon. The territory described includes the land of Gilead, with its southern boundary at the Arnon River (the middle of the valley serving as the border) and its northern boundary at the Jabbok River, which was the border with the Ammonites. This allotment is part of the broader distribution of the conquered lands of Sihon and Og, which Moses gave to the two and a half tribes.

The verse demonstrates the fulfillment of God’s promise to give Israel the land, as He had promised to the patriarchs. It also highlights the principle of inheritance and responsibility: the tribes received their inheritance, but they were obligated to help their brothers secure theirs first. The specific geographic details underscore the historical reality of God’s provision and the orderly distribution of the land among the tribes of Israel.

  • Unity in the Church: As believers in Christ, we are called to unity within the body of Christ. Just as Reuben and Gad supported their fellow Israelites, we should support and encourage one another, serving together to advance God’s kingdom on earth.

  • Faithful Commitment: We should honor our commitments, whether to God or to others. This includes fulfilling our responsibilities within the Church, honoring our promises, and being people of integrity in all areas of life.

  • Trusting God’s Provision: Like the Reubenites and Gadites, we can trust that God will provide for our needs as we faithfully follow Him. We should seek His guidance and trust in His provision, knowing that He is a faithful and generous God.

The faithfulness of Reuben and Gad in honoring their commitment to fight alongside their brethren reminds us of the importance of integrity and keeping our word. Their example also teaches us that God’s provision often comes with responsibility, and that we are called to support one another in fulfilling God’s purposes.
