Listen to this article

“And I commanded you at that time, saying, The Lord your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are meet for the war.”

This verse is part of Moses’ recounting of the events that took place during the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness before entering the Promised Land. It is important to understand the historical context of the verse to grasp its significance.

Context and Background:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament and is mainly a collection of Moses’ final speeches to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. Moses is reminding the Israelites of God’s promises, commandments, and their past experiences as they prepare to possess the land.

God’s Command to Possess the Land:In this verse, Moses reminds the Israelites of the commandment God had given them concerning the Promised Land. The land they were about to possess was a gift from the Lord, and He had promised to give it to them as an inheritance. It is important to note that God’s promises were conditional upon their obedience and faithfulness to Him.

Passing Over Armed:Moses instructs the Israelites to pass over armed before their brethren, the children of Israel. This implies that they were to serve as a vanguard or forefront of the Israelite forces, leading the way in battle. They were to be prepared and equipped for war as they entered the land to conquer it.

Meeting the Requirements of War:Moses specifies that those who were fit for war were to pass over armed. This highlights the need for preparedness and readiness for the challenges they would face. The Israelites had encountered various enemies during their wilderness journey, and they were now entering a land occupied by strong nations. Therefore, it was crucial for them to be physically and spiritually prepared for the battles that lay ahead.

This verse reminds the Israelites of their divine calling to possess the Promised Land and emphasizes the importance of their preparedness and commitment to God’s commandments. It also serves as a reminder for believers today to remain steadfast in their faith, ready to face the spiritual battles they may encounter in their lives.

Overall, Deuteronomy 3:18 encourages the Israelites to trust in God’s promises, obey His commands, and be prepared for the challenges ahead as they enter the land of their inheritance.
