Deuteronomy 3:19

But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, (for I know that ye have much cattle,) shall abide in your cities which I have given you;

Deuteronomy 3:19 (KJV)

Deuteronomy 3:19 is part of Moses’ address to Israel as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had already received their inheritance east of the Jordan. Moses instructs that while their fighting men cross over armed to help their brothers conquer the land west of the Jordan, their wives, little ones, and cattle are to remain in the cities already given to them.

The verse assures these tribes that their families and possessions will be safe in the cities they have been given. The mention of cattle indicates the abundance of livestock, and the land of Gilead and Bashan was known for excellent pasturage suitable for their herds. This arrangement reflects God’s concern for the well-being and preservation of families and their possessions.

The immediate context continues in verse 20, which explains that the fighting men were to remain across the Jordan until the LORD gave rest to their brothers, as he had to them, and they also possessed the land. Only then could they return to their own possessions. This shows a principle of unity and mutual responsibility among the tribes of Israel.

This verse highlights God’s provision and the importance of trusting His faithfulness. While some were called to battle, others were entrusted with the care of the home and the community’s resources. It reminds believers that God cares for families and provides for their needs, even in times of transition and challenge.

Consider how God has given you a place of safety and provision. Reflect on the balance between going forth to serve others and caring for what has been entrusted to you. Trust that God, who gave the land and cities, is faithful to preserve what He has provided.
