Deuteronomy 27:23

Posted on 27 August 2024
Listen to this article

“Cursed be he that lieth with his mother-in-law. And all the people shall say, Amen.”

Context and Background:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament and contains the final speeches of Moses to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this particular chapter, Moses instructs the people to set up large stones on Mount Ebal, where they were to write all the words of the law after they crossed the Jordan River.

Understanding the Verse:Deuteronomy 27:23 addresses the prohibition against sexual relations with one’s mother-in-law. It declares a curse upon anyone who commits such an act, and the people are instructed to respond with “Amen,” signifying their agreement and affirmation of God’s command.

Moral and Spiritual Lessons:

  • Sanctity of Marriage:The verse highlights the importance of honouring the sanctity of marriage and maintaining proper boundaries within family relationships. It emphasises the gravity of violating the marriage covenant by engaging in a forbidden sexual relationship.
  • Respect and Honour:This verse underscores the principle of respecting and honouring one’s family relationships. It emphasises the inherent respect and boundaries that should be maintained between a son-in-law and his mother-in-law, promoting healthy familial dynamics.
  • Sexual Purity:The verse serves as a reminder of the biblical call for sexual purity. It reinforces the commandments against adultery and incest, which are important for maintaining healthy relationships and upholding God’s moral standards.

Application:Though this particular verse pertains to a specific prohibition within the Mosaic Law, it carries broader lessons that are relevant to believers today:

  • Upholding the sanctity of marriage:Christians are called to honour and preserve the sacred bond of marriage, avoiding any form of infidelity or sexual immorality.
  • Respecting family relationships:Demonstrating respect and honour towards one’s family members, including in-laws, fosters healthy relationships and promotes harmony within families.
  • Pursuing sexual purity:Christians are encouraged to live in accordance with God’s standards of sexual purity, which includes avoiding any sexual activity outside the boundaries of marriage.

It’s important to note that as Christians, we are under the New Covenant established by Jesus Christ, and the ceremonial and civil laws of the Old Testament, including the specific prohibition mentioned in Deuteronomy 27:23, are not binding on us. However, the underlying principles of honouring marriage, respecting family relationships, and pursuing sexual purity remain applicable and valuable for believers today.

Remember to consult your pastor, spiritual mentors, or trusted biblical resources for further guidance and insight as you study and apply the teachings of the Bible.
