Leviticus 18:7

The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.

Leviticus 18 gathers God’s commands to Israel about sexual conduct. These laws set the people apart from the nations around them and protected the family as the basic unit of society. The chapter opens with a general rule in verse 6: no one may approach a close relative for sexual contact. Verse 7 then names the first specific case, the parent-child bond.

Meaning

The phrase “uncover her nakedness” is a respectful way of speaking about sexual relations. The verse forbids a child from having sexual intercourse with either parent. The words “she is thy mother” make the meaning clear. The command against the father’s nakedness refers to sexual relations with the mother, because such an act would shame the father and violate the marriage bond. This is not about seeing someone unclothed, as in the account of Noah’s sons. It is about a deliberate sexual act.

The wording “she is thy mother” stresses the unique and lasting relationship between a child and mother. A mother gives life and care. To use that bond for sexual intimacy is a deep betrayal of trust and family honor. The command is absolute and applies to every person. It draws a firm boundary that protects the family from harm.

Biblical connections

This law rests on the created order. God made the family from the beginning, and He gave sexual intimacy as a gift for marriage alone. The New Testament continues this teaching. It calls believers to sexual purity and condemns sexual immorality, including incest, as contrary to God’s will. The same holy standard that guarded Israel now guides the church.

Application

Christians are not under the Mosaic Law as a binding code. Jesus fulfilled the Law and established a new covenant. Yet the principles behind this command remain. Believers are called to honor their parents, treat them with dignity, and keep every family relationship pure. This includes guarding against any form of sexual misconduct or inappropriate closeness with relatives.

Respecting boundaries is a way of honoring God. When a person refuses to cross these lines, he protects his own heart and the well-being of others. He also bears witness to the holiness God requires. Sexual purity is not only a private matter; it strengthens the whole community.
