Deuteronomy 30:15

Posted on 3 September 2024
Listen to this article

“See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil.”

Context:The book of Deuteronomy contains Moses’ farewell address to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. It serves as a reminder of God’s covenant with Israel and the importance of obedience to His commands.

The Choice Presented:In Deuteronomy 30:15, Moses tells the people that God has set before them a choice between life and good, and death and evil. This choice involves choosing between following God’s commandments, which lead to life and blessing, or turning away from God and His ways, which result in death and destruction.

Life and Good:“Life and good” represents the blessings and benefits that come from obeying God’s commands. Throughout the book of Deuteronomy, Moses emphasizes that following God’s laws leads to a prosperous and fulfilling life. It includes physical well-being, spiritual blessings, and the enjoyment of God’s presence and favour.

Death and Evil:“Death and evil” signifies the consequences of disobedience and turning away from God. It encompasses not only physical death but also spiritual separation from God, moral decay, and the negative effects of sin and rebellion. When people reject God’s ways, they experience the brokenness and pain that result from living apart from His intended plan.

The Importance of the Choice:The verse highlights the significance of the choice before the Israelites (and by extension, all of humanity). It shows that God values human free will and holds individuals responsible for their choices. It emphasizes the seriousness of choosing to follow or reject God’s commands and the consequences that flow from those choices.

Application to Our Lives:Although Deuteronomy 30:15 was originally addressed to the Israelites, its message carries relevance for believers today. We, too, face a similar choice between following God’s ways or pursuing our own desires. This verse calls us to consider the consequences of our choices and encourages us to choose a life that is aligned with God’s will and purposes.

The Gospel Message:Ultimately, the choice presented in Deuteronomy 30:15 finds its fulfilment in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the embodiment of life and good, as He offers salvation, forgiveness, and eternal life through His death and resurrection. Those who choose to follow Him receive the abundant life and experience the goodness of God. On the other hand, those who reject Him remain in spiritual death and separation from God.

In conclusion, Deuteronomy 30:15 reminds us of the fundamental choice set before us—to embrace life and good by obeying God’s commands or to choose death and evil by turning away from Him. May we choose wisely and seek to live in alignment with God’s will, experiencing the abundant life found in Christ.
