Deuteronomy 30:15
See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;
Deuteronomy 30:15 (KJV)
Context
The book of Deuteronomy records Moses’ farewell address to the Israelites as they stood ready to enter the Promised Land. He reminded them of God’s covenant and the importance of obeying His commands. This verse is part of a larger passage where Moses urged the people to choose life, calling heaven and earth as witnesses to their decision. The choice was not hidden or complicated; it was set before them clearly.
Meaning
In this verse, Moses told the people that God had set before them a clear choice between life and good, and death and evil. The language is stark and intentional, showing how serious this decision was. It meant following God’s commandments, which lead to life and blessing, or turning away from Him, which results in death and destruction. This choice affects not only the individual but also the community and future generations.
“Life and good” represents the blessings that come from obeying God. Throughout Deuteronomy, Moses taught that following God’s laws leads to a prosperous and fulfilling life. This includes physical well-being, spiritual blessings, and the enjoyment of God’s presence and favour. “Death and evil” signifies the consequences of disobedience. It includes not only physical death but also spiritual separation from God, moral decay, and the brokenness that comes from living apart from His plan.
Biblical connections
The New Testament echoes this theme. Romans 6:23 states that “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This connection shows that while the Old Covenant was given specifically to Israel, the principle of choosing life through obedience remains relevant. The choice in Deuteronomy pointed forward to Jesus Christ, who offers salvation, forgiveness, and eternal life through His death and resurrection. Those who follow Him receive abundant life, while those who reject Him remain in spiritual death.
Application
Although this verse was first addressed to the Israelites, its message applies to believers today. Every person faces a similar choice between following God’s ways or pursuing their own desires. This verse calls us to consider the consequences of our choices and encourages us to choose a life aligned with God’s will. It also reminds us that our decisions affect not only ourselves but also our families and future generations. The call to “choose life” includes teaching this choice to our children, so that they too may live.
Reflection
God values human free will and holds each person responsible for their choices. He does not force anyone to follow Him, but He clearly presents the outcome of each path. The choice between life and death is set before us every day. May we choose wisely, seeking to live in obedience to God and experiencing the abundant life found in Christ.
