Deuteronomy 30:16

In that I command thee this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.

Deuteronomy 30:16 (KJV)

Deuteronomy records Moses’ final speeches to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses speaks on behalf of God, giving a command that carries a promise. The immediate setting, Deuteronomy 30:15-20, places before the people a choice between life and death, blessing and cursing. This verse presents the path that leads to life and blessing.

The command to love the LORD thy God is not mainly an emotion. It is a commitment of devotion, reverence, and loyalty that shows itself in obedience. This love is the heart of the first table of the law, covering the whole worship of God. It stands against idolatry and any worship that follows human invention rather than God’s instruction.

To walk in his ways means to follow the path God has marked out. It involves living by His instructions, principles, and teachings. Keeping his commandments and his statutes and his judgments means observing all that God has commanded. The commandments include the Ten Commandments given at Mount Sinai. The statutes and judgments are the broader body of law for Israel. Together they call for a life shaped by God’s will.

The promised results are life, multiplication, and blessing in the land. These are not abstract rewards. They are concrete, earthly consequences for the covenant community. The blessing is tied to the land they are entering to possess. The phrase this day stresses present urgency and personal responsibility. The choice is not distant; it is before them now.

Jesus affirmed this same command when He said, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37). He also said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). These words connect love for God with obedience, just as Deuteronomy does. Love is not separate from action; it is proven through faithful living.

This verse was first spoken to Israel, but its principle remains for believers today. We are called to love God, walk in His ways, and keep His commandments. Love for God is demonstrated in daily choices. Walking in His ways means letting Scripture guide our decisions. Keeping His commandments means obeying Him even when it is costly.

Obedience is not a way to earn God’s favor. It is the proper response to His grace and the path He has appointed for our good. When we live in obedience to God’s Word and seek to honor Him in all areas, we open ourselves to His blessing. The abundant life He promises is found in loyal, obedient love to Him.

The choice set before Israel is set before us as well. Each day we decide whom we will serve and which path we will walk. Loving God is not a feeling we wait to have. It is a decision we make and renew. As we walk in His ways and keep His commands, we experience the life and blessing He has promised to those who love Him.
