Joshua 1:8

Listen to this article

"This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success."

Context and Background:Joshua 1:8 is part of a passage where God commissions Joshua to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land after the death of Moses. This verse contains the Lord’s instruction to Joshua on how to be successful in his leadership and in following God’s commands.

The Importance of God’s Word:

  • "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth":The "book of the law" refers to the Scriptures, specifically the commands and teachings given by God to Moses. It emphasises the importance of consistently speaking and declaring God’s Word. It means that the Word of God should always be on our lips, guiding our thoughts, words, and actions.
  • "Meditate therein day and night":Joshua is instructed to meditate on the Scriptures continually. Meditation involves focused reflection, pondering, and internalising God’s Word. It is not merely reading but engaging deeply with Scripture, allowing it to shape our thinking and transform our lives. Regular meditation on God’s Word leads to spiritual growth, wisdom, and understanding.

Observing and Obeying God’s Word:

  • "That thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein":The purpose of meditating on God’s Word is to understand and apply it in our lives. We are called not just to read and understand Scripture, but to obey and live it out. The goal is to align our thoughts, attitudes, and actions with God’s commands and principles.
  • Obedience brings blessing:God promises prosperity and success to Joshua if he obeys and follows His Word. This is not a guarantee of material wealth, but rather an assurance of God’s guidance, provision, and favour as Joshua fulfils his leadership role. Obedience to God’s Word brings blessings and a fruitful life.

Application to Our Lives:

  • Consistent study and meditation:Like Joshua, we are called to immerse ourselves in God’s Word regularly. This involves reading, studying, and reflecting on Scripture. By doing so, we gain spiritual nourishment, guidance, and understanding.
  • Aligning our lives with God’s Word:It is not enough to know the Bible intellectually; we must also put it into practice. Our actions should reflect our faith and obedience to God’s commands. As we live in accordance with His Word, we experience His blessings and guidance in our lives.
  • Dependence on God:Joshua’s success was not dependent solely on his abilities or strategies but on his submission to God and His Word. Similarly, our success in life is not determined by worldly measures but by our relationship with God and our obedience to His Word.
