Joshua 1:8

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Joshua 1:8 (KJV)

Joshua 1:8 belongs to the moment when God commissions Joshua to lead Israel into the Promised Land after Moses has died. The Lord speaks directly to Joshua, giving him the key to success in his new role. The verse points to the book of the law, meaning the Torah, the first five books of the Old Testament written by Moses, which contain God’s commands and teachings for His people.

The phrase “this book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth” means that God’s Word should be constantly on Joshua’s lips. He is to speak it, recite it, and let it shape his conversation. The command to “meditate therein day and night” calls for ongoing, thoughtful reflection on Scripture. This is not casual reading but deep, focused engagement that shapes the mind and heart.

The purpose of such meditation is clear: “that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein.” Knowing God’s Word is not an end in itself. The goal is obedience, living out what God has commanded. The promise attached is that Joshua will “make thy way prosperous” and “have good success.” This success is not primarily material wealth. It is the success of walking in God’s will and fulfilling the purpose He has given.

This verse echoes the pattern of Deuteronomy, where Moses repeatedly urges Israel to keep God’s commands and teach them to their children. The same emphasis on speaking and meditating on God’s Word appears in Psalm 1, where the blessed person delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night. Both passages link such devotion to a fruitful and stable life.

Like Joshua, believers are called to keep God’s Word close. This means reading Scripture regularly, reflecting on its meaning, and letting it guide daily decisions. It also means speaking God’s truth in conversation, not hiding it. The goal is not mere knowledge but practical obedience. As we obey, we experience God’s guidance and favour, even when outward circumstances are difficult.

Success in God’s eyes is not measured by wealth or position. It is measured by faithfulness to His Word. Joshua’s success depended on his submission to God, not on his own strategies. The same is true for every believer. Dependence on God and His Word leads to a life that prospers in the ways that matter most.

Consider how often God’s Word is on your lips and in your thoughts. Is it a constant companion or an occasional visitor? Meditation requires time and intention. It means pausing to ponder what God has said and asking how it applies to your life. When the Word fills the mind, it naturally shapes the words and actions that follow.

The promise of this verse stands for all who treasure Scripture. A life rooted in God’s Word will not be shaken. It will bear fruit in its season and bring honour to God. Let this verse encourage you to make meditation on Scripture a daily habit, trusting that God rewards those who seek Him with their whole heart.
