Nehemiah 2 begins with Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the king of Persia, feeling distressed upon learning about the devastating state of Jerusalem. He prays to God for favor before approaching the king, who notices his sadness and inquires about it. Nehemiah explains his desire to go to Jerusalem and rebuild it, seeking the king's permission and assistance.
In response, the king grants Nehemiah's request, providing him with letters of authorization and supplies for the journey. Nehemiah sets out on his mission under the protection of God's hand. Upon reaching Jerusalem, he assesses the city's walls during the night, accompanied by a few men. He does so discreetly, not revealing his purpose to anyone.
After his examination, Nehemiah gathers the city officials and shares his intentions to rebuild the walls and restore Jerusalem's honor. His speech inspires the people, and they respond positively, saying, "Let us rise up and build." However, nearby enemies, Sanballat and Tobiah, mock and ridicule their efforts.
Nehemiah encourages the people, reminding them of God's favor and protection. He organizes the workers into different teams and assigns them specific sections of the wall to rebuild. Despite the opposition, the people work diligently on their assigned tasks.
