Nehemiah 2:8

And a letter vnto Asaph the keeper of the kings forrest, that he may giue me timber to make beames for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the Citie, and for the house that I shall enter into: And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God vpon me. Nehemiah 2:8 (KJV)

Background: Nehemiah was a Jewish cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes. He received news about the condition of Jerusalem, which had been destroyed and its walls broken down. Nehemiah had a burden to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and sought permission from the king to accomplish this task.

Faith in Action: In Nehemiah 2:8, we see Nehemiah’s faith in action. He approached the king and requested timber to rebuild the gates, walls, and his own house in Jerusalem. This required faith because Nehemiah was essentially asking for resources and support from a foreign king to restore the city of his ancestors.

Recognizing God’s Hand: Nehemiah acknowledges that the king’s permission and the granting of his request were due to the good hand of his God upon him. Despite working in a foreign land, Nehemiah recognized that God’s providence was with him and that God was orchestrating events for his plan to be fulfilled.

Trusting God’s Provision: Nehemiah’s confidence was not in his own ability or the favour of the king alone but in the good hand of his God. He trusted that God would provide what he needed to accomplish the task. This verse reminds us of the importance of relying on God’s provision and guidance in our own lives.

Application: Nehemiah’s example challenges us to have faith in action, stepping out in trust and obedience to fulfil the tasks God has called us to. It encourages us to recognise and acknowledge God’s hand in our lives, understanding that He is the ultimate source of our provision and success.

Prayer and Reflection: Take a moment to reflect on your own life. Are there areas where you need to step out in faith, trusting God’s provision and guidance? Spend some time in prayer, asking God to strengthen your faith and provide the resources needed to fulfil His purposes.

“And it pleased the king, and he granted me what I required; for the good hand of my God was upon me.” (Nehemiah 2:9, KJV)

Remember, Nehemiah’s story is an inspiring example of a faithful servant who trusted in God’s guidance and provision. May we, like Nehemiah, seek to serve God faithfully and trust Him to provide all that is needed to fulfil His plans.
