Nehemiah 2:7
Moreouer I saide vnto the king, If it please the king, let letters be giuen mee to the gouernours beyond the Riuer, that they may conuey me ouer, till I come into Iudah; Nehemiah 2:7 (KJV)
Nehemiah was a Jewish cupbearer to King Artaxerxes I of Persia. He received news about the distressing condition of Jerusalem, including the broken walls and burnt gates. This deeply affected Nehemiah, and he prayed to God for guidance. In the month of Nisan, four months after hearing the news, he had the opportunity to speak with the king.
Act of Faith and Humility: Nehemiah was deeply concerned about the welfare of his people and the city of Jerusalem. He saw an opportunity to approach the king and make a request, but he first sought God’s guidance through prayer. This act of faith and humility is an essential aspect of effective leadership. Nehemiah did not rely on his own abilities; he sought divine intervention before taking any action.
Submitting to Authority: Nehemiah recognized the authority of the king. Despite his position as a trusted cupbearer, he still needed the king’s permission and assistance to undertake the task of rebuilding Jerusalem. He approached the king with respect and presented his request in a way that honored the king’s authority, demonstrating the importance of respecting and submitting to those in authority over us.
The Power of Preparation: Nehemiah did not approach the king with a vague idea or a general desire to help. He had a well‑thought‑out plan. In verse 7, he requested letters to be given to the governors beyond the river, asking for their cooperation and assistance, and he also asked for the king’s authorization to travel to Judah. His preparation showed his commitment and dedication to the task at hand, reminding us that significant undertakings require careful planning.
Trusting in God’s Providence: While Nehemiah presented his plan to the king, he ultimately recognized that it was God who was working behind the scenes. Even though he sought the king’s approval, he trusted that God would grant him success. Nehemiah’s trust in God’s providence is evident throughout the book as he faced various challenges and opposition, teaching us to rely on God’s guidance and sovereignty.
Willingness to Take Action: Nehemiah not only prayed and sought permission but also took the necessary steps to address the situation in Jerusalem. He asked the king for resources, letters of authority, and safe passage to Judah. His initiative and willingness to act inspire us; good intentions must be accompanied by decisive action.
Application: Nehemiah 2:7 encourages us to approach our tasks and challenges with faith, humility, preparation, and respect for authority while trusting in God’s providence. It also emphasizes the importance of proactive action in pursuing God’s calling. Like Nehemiah, we can make a positive impact when we rely on God’s guidance and act with determination.
