Joshua 11:1
And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,
Joshua 11:1 (KJV)
Context
After Israel defeated the southern kings, Joshua led the people north. Jabin ruled Hazor, a large and strong city in northern Canaan. He heard what had happened and knew his land could be next. Hazor was a significant city, known for its military strength, so its king’s reaction carried great weight. Jabin’s response shows that news of Israel’s success spread and provoked opposition.
Meaning
Jabin sent messengers to three other kings: Jobab of Madon, the king of Shimron, and the king of Achshaph. These rulers joined forces to stop Israel. Their alliance shows how seriously they feared Joshua’s army. The names of these kings and cities are historically rooted, and the coalition underscores the scale of the threat Joshua faced. Hazor was strategically important, and its king’s call to arms drew others into a united front. This was not a small skirmish but a broad northern alliance.
Biblical connections
This verse begins the northern campaign, which ends with Israel’s victory at the waters of Merom (Joshua 11:5). God had promised to give the land to His people, and no alliance of human kings could prevent that promise. The verse highlights the reality of opposition to God’s people and God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promise. It also demonstrates that human alliances formed against God’s purposes are ultimately futile. The scale of the threat makes God’s deliverance even more evident.
Application
When we face strong opposition, we can trust that God is with us. Jabin gathered many kings, but God was greater. Our battles may seem overwhelming, but God fights for His people and keeps His promises. This passage encourages believers to trust in God’s sovereignty even when opposition seems overwhelming, and to remember that God fights for His people. We can face our own challenges with confidence, knowing that no human plan can thwart God’s will.
Reflection
Notice how quickly news of God’s power spread. The Canaanite kings responded with fear and resistance. We can respond differently: with faith and obedience, knowing that God’s plans will stand. Human alliances formed against God’s purposes are ultimately futile, so we can rest in His sovereign care. Let this verse remind us that God’s promises are sure, and His power is greater than any opposition we may encounter.
