Joshua 11:5
And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.
Joshua 11:5 (KJV)
Context
Joshua 11 records Israel’s conquest of the Promised Land under Joshua. By this point, Israel had already defeated the southern kings, and news of these victories spread fear through the northern cities. In response, a coalition of northern kings gathered their armies together to oppose Israel. This was not a small skirmish; it was a united, deliberate alliance. The kings joined forces, recognizing that Israel was a serious threat.
Meaning
The verse says that “all these kings were met together” and “pitched together at the waters of Merom.” The waters of Merom was a lake or marshy area in the northern part of the land, near Hazor, the city of Jabin, one of the leading kings. The location was strategic, chosen for a coordinated attack. The phrase “to fight against Israel” shows the clear purpose of this gathering. The coalition was not merely defensive; they intended to stop Israel’s advance. Their unity and planning made them a formidable enemy. The gathering of these kings also reflects the fear that Israel’s conquest had instilled in the inhabitants of the land, prompting them to unite in resistance. This event sets the stage for God’s promise to Joshua in the next verse, where He assures Joshua not to fear, for He will deliver the enemy into Israel’s hands.
Biblical connections
The human alliance and military might of these kings could not thwart God’s purposes. The subsequent victory at the waters of Merom, recorded in Joshua 11:7-8, demonstrates God’s faithfulness and the fulfillment of His promise to give Israel the land. This passage encourages believers to trust in God’s sovereignty even when faced with formidable opposition, and to remember that God is faithful to His promises. The historical and geographical details ground the narrative in real events, affirming the reliability of Scripture.
Application
Joshua 11:5 reminds us that we may face opposition and challenges when we pursue God’s purposes for our lives. Just as the Israelites faced a united enemy, we may encounter obstacles that seem overwhelming. The battles we face are not fought alone; we have a faithful God who fights for us. We are called to trust in His promises and rely on His power, even when the opposition appears strong. God’s power is greater than any united opposition, and He will be faithful to His promises, just as He was for Israel.
Reflection
This verse encourages us to see that human alliances and military might cannot thwart God’s purposes. When we face formidable opposition, we can remember that God is sovereign and faithful. The gathering of the kings also reflects the fear that Israel’s conquest had instilled in the inhabitants of the land, prompting them to unite in resistance. Yet, God’s power is greater than any united opposition. We can trust that He will be faithful to His promises, just as He was for Israel.
