Joshua 11:3

And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh.

Joshua 11:3 (KJV)

Joshua 11 records Israel’s campaign against a coalition of northern Canaanite kings led by Jabin of Hazor. This verse names the peoples gathered against Joshua: Canaanites on the east and west, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites in the mountains, and Hivites under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh. The list shows the enemy’s wide geographic spread, from the Jordan valley to the Mediterranean coast and from the central hills to the far north.

The verse emphasizes the scale of opposition. These were not scattered tribes but a united force covering the whole land God had promised to Abraham’s descendants. The Canaanites on both sides indicate the threat was not local. The Jebusites in the mountains point to the hill country around Jerusalem, while the Hivites near Mount Hermon mark the northern boundary. Every region had its own people, yet all stood against Israel.

God had commanded Israel to drive out these nations (Deuteronomy 7:1). Their presence fulfilled the promise that the land would be given to Abraham’s offspring. The detailed geography shows that no part of the land was beyond God’s plan. The coalition’s size made human victory impossible, but the following chapters record that God gave Israel success over all of them.

Believers face obstacles that seem as many and as widespread as these tribes. The verse teaches that God’s promises are not defeated by human alliances or geographical barriers. Joshua did not rely on his own strength; he trusted God’s word. In the same way, Christians can face challenges with confidence, knowing that God is faithful to complete what He has promised.

The list of nations reminds us that God sees the whole picture. He knew every tribe and every mountain, yet He gave the land to Israel. When we face opposition from many sides, we can rest in the truth that God’s power is greater than any coalition. His purposes will stand, and His people can move forward in obedience and faith.
